Mentor Program

LISD Mentor Program

The Livingston ISD Mentor program provides a unique opportunity for qualified adults to give back to the students of LISD and make a positive impact on a student’s life.  Mentors commit to volunteering a minimum of 30-45 minutes a week, giving their undivided attention to students, and may serve a student by:

  • Being a positive role model
  • Advocating for the student
  • Encouraging the student and helping them set and achieve goals
  • Boosting their self-esteem
  • Serving as a teacher, coach, and active listener

Each campus determines whether or not a student would benefit from having a Mentor based on referrals from teachers.  Once a student is identified, the parent or guardian is contacted and informed that their child has the opportunity to participate in the Mentor Program.  Parents or guardians must give their permission to have their child participate in the Mentor Program.  Once permission is given by the parent or guardian, the student is the campus will contact the student and ask if he or she would like to participate in the program.  Students are not required to participate and are free to choose whether or not they would like to participate.  Here are a few of the benefits we have observed by students who participate in the Mentor Program.

FAQs

  • Mentors are asked to volunteer a minimum of 30-45 minutes per week during the school day. This is a school-based program; therefore, all mentoring takes place at the student's campus during a time that has been set up by the Campus Liaison and the mentor. Outside contact is not allowed unless it is at a school function, such as a basketball game.

  • Opportunities to mentor are available at all Livingston ISD campuses. All Livingston ISD volunteers are required to complete the online Livingston ISD volunteer application. This process includes a background check. Once approved, the campus Mentor Liaison will contact interested mentors to schedule the mentor orientation and training. Trained mentors will then be matched with a student and a date will be established to begin the program.
